Assad’s forces take Sheikh Maskin

On 26 January 2016 Syrian government forces took the town of Sheikh Maskin in southern Syria from the Syrian rebels.

This success will ease the Syrian regime’s communication with the part of Daraa city they control, while at the same time complicating the rebels’ communication between the areas they control in the western and eastern parts of Daraa Province.

United States and European Union remove sanctions against Iran

After an IAEA report stating Iran is fulfilling the terms of the nuclear deal, USA and EU lifted Sanctions against Iran on 16 January 2016.

The move is expected to impact the oil prices, pushing them further down, since the end of sanctions means Iran can freely rejoin the oil market as a supplier. The oil prices have been steadily falling lately, seriously damaging financial state of oil exporting nations, such as Russia.

Saudi Arabia, allies, cut ties with Iran

On 4 January 2016 Saudi Arabia announced it was cutting transportation and commercial ties with Iran, a day after it severed diplomatic relations. Saudi ally Bahrain and close partner Sudan followed suit in cutting relations with Iran, while another Saudi ally United Arab Emirates downgraded diplomatic relations with Tehran. Days Later, Kuwait and Qatar also severed ties with Iran.

These gestures are largely symbolic, since the Sunni Arab coalition already is engaged in every kind of struggle against Iran and its allies short of direct military confrontation.

Daesh [ISIS] captures Bin Jawad in Libya

It is now reported that forces of Daesh have, as of January 2016, captured the town of Bin Jawad on the Libyan sea coast. The town is located 150 kilometers to the east of the Daesh Libyan stronghold of Sirte. The next target of Daesh appears to be As Sidr, further to the east.

While Daesh is experiencing one setback after another on the Syrian and Iraqi front lines, it is slowly but steadily expanding in Libya .

It seems obvious that Daesh is attempting to take control of Libyan oil and its routes for export through the Mediterranean. Below is the map of Libyan oil fields and oil transportation routes:
